THE NH ASSOCIATION of School Principals is proud to select Lois Costa as their 2014 recipient of the Elementary School Principal of the Year Award. Over the last three years, Costa has worked diligently to address the needs of the underperforming subgroups in her building.
She rallied the staff to develop plans to focus on how to strengthen the Level II and III tiers in the Response to Intervention model in her school. Students who were still struggling were afforded the opportunity for an extended day with a focus on skills.
In addition to this, Costa invited the district social worker to join the school improvement team in order to support students and families in crisis. Together, the team reached out to parents to help develop success plans for each student in need and the teachers volunteered to become their mentors.
Through all of these efforts led by Costa, the Marston School of Hampton became a "Reward School" in Commissioner Barry's Circle of Excellence Program.
