Searching for the real Ethan Allen

What about one of Ethan Allen's most famous quotes, repeated in many of his biographies as a veiled warning to the Yorkers with designs on the New Hampshire land grants that Allen defended: "The gods of the valleys are not the gods of the hills." The passage first appears in Ira's 1798 history of Vermont, then re-emerges 35 years later in the writing of another admirer. Did Ethan really say that?
