Pinkerton Academy wins Governor's Cup Challenge
DURHAM - Coming off its Granite State SuperChallenge victory last week, Derry's Pinkerton Academy beat Acton-Boxborough High School in Massachusetts, 365-200, in the second annual New Hampshire-Massachusetts Governor's Cup Challenge.
The challenge pits the winners of N.H. Public Television's Granite State Challenge against the winners of the WGBH High School Quiz Show.
Though the lead bounced back and forth at the beginning of the match, Pinkerton pulled ahead in the bonus rounds and maintained its lead after that.
"It was beyond my wildest dreams to have qualified for this game. I'm proud of my students for doing so well," said Pinkerton coach Peter Crowell, who added that playing in New Hampshire by the Granite State Challenge rules rather than the WGBH rules was an advantage for the team.
Pinkerton was represented by captain Ben Foley, Sara Tridenti, Jake Hudgins and Joe Ronca. Pam Griswold also was a coach.
Granite State Challenge began its season with 16 New Hampshire high school teams competing in a quiz show that emphasizes quick recall of material in math, science, social studies, language and fine arts - along with a mix of questions about current events, entertainment, sports and regional topics.
