Hooksett Gardening Project to begin Memorial Day

HOOKSETT — In each of the last three years, the Department of Public Works has received increased inquiries into the town’s Community Gardening Project.

The demand this year was so high that officials added six new plots at a second park.

In 2013, all 18 plots allocated for the Community Gardening Project at Donati Park were taken. Currently, six of those 8-by-10-foot spaces at Donati, adjacent to Town Hall, are spoken for; and two of the six spots added at Frasier Park, located on K Avenue, have been filled.

The ultimate goal of the project, which begins Monday, Memorial Day, and concludes on Oct. 31, is to provide residents a valuable resource to enjoy gardening and growing fresh produce, said Public Works Director Leo Lessard, who noted residents have the ability to grow anything they want, from vegetables to flowers, as long as it’s legal.

The plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those plots not tended to by June 6 will be revoked, unless the DPW has been informed of extenuating circumstances. Any produce grown is restricted from being sold for profit, and all trash must be removed from the plots each time they are tended to.
