New Hampshire grieves: Officer Stephen Arkell, R.I.P.

The feeling of grief and loss for Brentwood police Officer Stephen Arkell remains very real and close across New Hampshire today.

That is a good thing.

If, in our small state, we ever get to the point where the loss of a peace officer in the line of duty becomes so commonplace, so “routine’’ that it is greeted with mere shrugs, we have lost more than we could ever regain.

One such death is one too many.

New Hampshire has had way too many in recent years, and we and our elected and appointed officials need to do all we can to prevent them. That means incorporating the lessons learned from Arkell’s death and that of other officers into the training that all police receive.

It means bringing that training to the highest possible levels.

In the meantime, as we approach Memorial Day and remember our own lost loved ones, we grieve and pray, too, for Officer Arkell, his family, and our New Hampshire community.
