State police increase patrols for holiday weekend

SALEM — There will be more state police patrols on the roads, and the skies, this weekend as part of a coordinated effort by Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine state police to keep the roads safe for the Memorial Day weekend.

At a news conference at the Salem rest area on Interstate 93 north on Thursday morning, officers from each state spoke about the increased patrols and the need for drivers to act safely.

“With the warm weather finally here, we expect several hundred thousand additional visitors to the state over the weekend,” said New Hampshire State Police Col. Robert Quinn. “This holiday weekend is the start of summer for us.”

The multi-state operation will run throughout the weekend and include additional patrols looking for aggressive and impaired drivers. A major focus will be on reducing dangerous speeds and other moving violations.

So far this year in New Hampshire, there have been 22 traffic fatalities on the highways.

Quinn said 75 percent of those are caused by factors such as drinking, excessive speed or distracted driving.

The high visibility patrols this year will include Route I-93 from Route I-495 in Massachusetts to the Hooksett Toll in New Hampshire and I-95 from Danvers, Mass., to the Maine border.

“Traffic safety programs are one of the primary missions of our department,” said Capt. Michael Drummy of the Massachusetts State Police.

He said his department will have a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol at state parks and pools, as well as for underage drivers under the influence.

“We need the public’s support,” said Drummy.
