Arkell to be remembered at ceremony on Monday

CONCORD - Stephen Arkell's name won't be on the memorial wall, but his sacrifice will be honored.

On Monday, New Hampshire dignitaries will join relatives and police officers from across the state to remember those whose names are engraved on the New Hampshire Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, situated on the grounds of the Legislative Office Building in Concord.

The 10 a.m. ceremony falls one week after the shooting death of Arkell, a 48-year-old Brentwood police officer and father of two.

Jane Young, associate attorney general, expects the annual event will be even more somber than usual.

"Because the pain and the tragedy is so fresh," she said. "There's an additional family that's there that's grieving with them.

"The hope is that you never add another name to that list and God forbid, another name has been added."
Two names were added to the memorial this year; both incidents date back to the 19th century and were only recently discovered.

Special Officer George E. Pray of the Dover police was shot and killed on New Year's Eve in 1888 by a man who had been recently released from the state's "insane asylum," and Manchester Police Sgt. Henry McAllister was shot and killed at the police station in 1895.
Earl Sweeney, assistant commissioner of safety, noted three names will be read for the first time at this year's ceremony: "two whose bravery had been lost in the mists of time . and one who tragically answered the final call to duty last week."
Members of Brentwood Police Department will lead this year's procession to begin the 10 a.m. ceremony. And they have been invited to join the relatives of fallen officers who will place a white carnation for each of those 46 - soon to be 47 - names on the wall.
