Hooksett man injured in trail bike collision in Merrimack

May 16. 2014 9:26AM

MERRIMACK -- A crash between two trail bikes in a sandpit off Front Street sent one man to a Manchester hospital with a leg injury.

Ryan Dempsey, 23, of Hooksett suffered a lower leg injury in the collision and was taken to Elliot Hospital for treatment, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game investigators.

The other biker, John Vanderminden, 18, of Bedford was uninjured.

According to Fish and Game, the collision happened about 4 p.m. Thursday when the two were riding trail bikes in the sandpit. Vanderminden briefly lost control in the soft sand and the two bikes collided. Both riders were thrown from their trail bikes.

Dempsey and Vanderminden were wearing helmets which helped prevent further injury, according to Fish and Game investigators who said operator error and trail conditions were contributing factors in the crash.

Conservation officers urge riders of off highway recreational vehicles to use caution when riding and keep in mind trail conditions and the proximity of other riders to prevent accidents.
