Massachusetts man faces drug charges after hitting pole in Pelham

PELHAM - A Massachusetts man faces drug charges after hitting a telephone pole Sunday morning in Pelham.

Pelham Police Lt. Brian McCarthy said police responded to a call of a car into a telephone pole at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, on Marsh Road near Noella Avenue. Responding officers reported the vehicle, a black 2005 Subaru Legacy, was leaking fluids and suffered heavy damage to the front end.

Police say the driver, identified as Zachary Randlett, 21, of Dracut, Mass., was traveling north on Marsh Road when he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed head-on into the telephone pole. Randlett suffered a small amount of bruising to his right arm, and was treated and released at the scene by the Pelham fire personnel.

Police say Randlett allegedly attempted to discard a duffle bag with marijuana prior to their arrival. Police say he was in possession of marijuana and placed under arrest, charged with transportation of drugs, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Randlett was released Sunday on $5,000 personal recognizance bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned at the 10th Circuit District Division in Salem June 16 at 8 a.m.

Police report the impact of the crash snapped the base of the telephone pole. Marsh Road was closed Sunday afternoon while the pole was replaced.
