College Roundup: SNHU baseball team reaches NE-10 finals

Shortstop Manny Cruz and right fielder Anthony Aceto each collected three hits to help the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team defeat Stonehill, 6-5, Saturday on the second day of the Northeast-10 Baseball Championship being played at SNHU.

SNHU, the top seed in the Northeast Division, improved its record to 38-12 and will play for the conference championship today.

The winner of Saturday's game between Stonehill and Adelphi will have to beat SNHU twice to win the title.

Reliever Alex Person (3-1) earned the win despite allowing five hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings.


SNHU 1, Wilmington 0: At West Haven, Conn., Ali Maloof pitched a shutout and had the game's lone RBI as SNHU avoided elimination in the NCAA East Regional. Tesia Stanasek scored the game's only run when she raced home from third when Maloof singled in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Penmen improved to 31-14 with the victory. SNHU will face top-seeded LIU-Post in today's championship round, and must beat LIU-Post twice to extend its season. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and, if necessary, a second game will follow.

Maloof tossed her third consecutive complete game. She struck out five and allowed five hits.

Earlier Saturday, LIU-Post scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and then collected the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat SNHU 3-2. Cara Daly hit a two-run home run in the fifth for the Penmen. Holly Eicher singled before Daley's homer.

Women's lacrosse

Adelphi 20, St. Anselm 6: At Garden City, N.Y., juniors Marissa Daly and Kaitlyn Stazinski, and sophomore Caitlin Villareal each recorded two points, but St. Anselm's season came to an end following this loss to top-ranked Adelphi in the NCAA tournament's first round.Daly and Villareal each scored two goals. Stazinski collected a goal and an assist.

The Hawks, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament, completed their season with a 13-5 record.



Colby 16, Plymouth State 5: At Waterville, Maine, Plymouth State completed its season with a 12-5 record following this loss to Colby in the NCAA Division III tournament.
