NHIAA Girls' Lacrosse: Astros keep foot on the gas
DERRY - Kennedy Daziel had six goals and an assist and Maggie McCarthy added four more as Pinkerton Academy rolled over rival Londonderry 15-5 Saturday afternoon.
The Astros improved to 11-1 while the Lancers fell to 4-5. Alexa Bedell had two goals and three assists for Londonderry, and Gabbi Morris added two goals.
Daziel and McCarthy made up all of the Astros first-half offense, scoring four goals each as Pinkerton took a 8-3 lead to the break.
"I look at the defense to see how they're set up. I also look for the cutters," said Daziel. "I look at their defensive stance to see if I can get that crease goal or a backdoor cut."
Coach Rob Daziel runs set plays on each possession.
"There's some adlib to it, but there's set structures for them." he said. "In this game you have to know where cutters are coming from. Giving them structure helps."
For Londonderry coach Mike Boyle, the game turned on gaining possessions at midfield.
"The game started and ended with them getting more balls in the midfield." said Boyle. "We just couldn't get the balls midfield. I think that was the key to the game."
"Our ride was pretty effective," Coach Daziel said. "Our girls work hard on their ride."
Even with a large lead, the intensity level never fell on the Pinkerton sideline.
"Lacrosse is a game of momentum, like a lot of sports," Coach Daziel said. "We've been down 7-0 and have come back. You can't slow down. We try to keep the girls going all the time."
