Sam selected by St. Louis; first openly gay player to be drafted by NFL

May 10. 2014 9:00PM

Michael Sam made history Saturday afternoon, as the St. Louis Rams made him the 249th overall choice in the 2014 NFL draft, reported.

The Missouri defensive end becomes the first openly gay player to be drafted in league history and seeks to be the first to ever play in the NFL. Video of Sam receiving the call from the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher revealed an emotional Sam surrounded by friends, family and his boyfriend.

Speaking to NFL Network immediately after the pick, Fisher made it clear his addition was based solely on his ability to play football.

“I don’t have any concern whatsoever,” Fisher said. “We drafted a good football player.”

All along, Sam insisted that he wanted to be known simply as a football player and not as some sort of trailblazer. Now he’ll get the chance just a couple of hours down the road from his college home in Columbia, Mo.
