Salem girls beat Dover, stay unbeaten in softball
SALEM — Reliever Rachel Towler struck out four over the last two innings with runners on base, securing Salem’s 5-3 win over Dover in softball on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (8-0) are the only unbeaten team in Division I. Dover fell to 5-3.
Brooke Murphey went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Brittany Wallace had two RBIs.
Dover was led by by pitcher Molly St. Germain, who went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and walk.
Longtime Salem coach Harold Sachs called the game one of the toughest of this season. “There was a time where we looked like we were going to break, but we pulled it out,” said Sachs.
Salem went up 1-0 in the first inning on an unearned run but Dover scored three runs on two hits and a Salem error in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own, two of them on a base hit by Wallace. Salem led 4-3 after three.
Salem got an insurance run in the sixth inning. Montana Davis tripled and Seanna Cloutier sacrificed her home.
Towler, who entered the game in the third inning, shut the door on Dover threats in the fifth, sixth and seventh, striking out four and stranding five Green Wave base runners.
“I knew this was a big game and I had to perform, so I just went out and did it,” said Towler. “Mostly I focus on pitching strikes.”
Said Sachs: “She’s a junior. She’s starting to really find her way on the mound. She’s a leader when she’s out there and I think people are comfortable playing behind her.”
