New running track, football sodding underway in Newport
NEWPORT — A town and school project to build a new running track around Maryn Field at Newport High School begins this week.
The $230,000 project is expected to be completed around July 4 and includes an upgrade and resodding of the high school football field as well, Newport recreation director PJ Lovely said Monday.
Until then, an alternate half-mile loop route for walkers and runners will be marked below the track and is open to the public, Lovely said.
“People will be able to run,” he said. The high school track is used for the high school and middle school track meets as well as an early morning exercise group and other school and recreation department activities.
“Our town is really trying to get healthy so people use it in the morning,” Lovely said. “It’s quite a community track.”The 1987 rubberized track surface is being ripped up and replaced by a modern rubberized surface that has more give, Lovely said. “It will be a much better surface to run on.”
