Keene man arrested for assaulting homeless man

KEENE - A Court Street man is being held on $5,000 cash bail after assaulting a homeless man Saturday night, said Keene Police Sgt. T.J. Derendal.

The homeless man was taken to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment of his injuries by the Keene Fire Department, he said.
Police responded to the West Street Shopping Plaza at 8:45 p.m. Saturday after a Hannaford Superstore employee reported a homeless man said he had been assaulted behind the store.

About an hour later, Sean D. Shelley, 29, of Court Street, came to the police station and turned himself in for the assault.

Shelley was charged with second-degree assault and robbery. Police say he beat the victim and stole the victim's cellphone.

Shelley was taken to the Cheshire County House of Corrections where he was held without bail pending his Tuesday arraignment in the 8th Circuit Court, Keene District Division. His bail was set at $5,000 cash. He was taken back to the jail in lieu of bail and is set to appear in district court May 14 for a probable cause hearing.
