Two people shot in downtown Nashua neighborhood; police believe victims were targeted

NASHUA -- Two people were shot in broad daylight Friday afternoon in a visible, downtown neighborhood, and authorities are continuing to search for the shooter.

The shootings took place shortly before 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Merrimack and Greeley Streets, which is near Holman Stadium and the Amherst Street Fire Station.

“They are in serious condition,” Lt. Francis Sullivan said of the two victims, who he identified as an adult male and an adult female. The identities of the two victims were not disclosed on Friday, and no arrests had been made as of 8 p.m.

Police said both victims were initially transported to city hospitals, but later taken to Boston hospitals for further medical treatment.

Sullivan would not comment on whether the incident was a drive-by shooting, or whether there was any altercation or disturbance prior to the shootings.

He also would not elaborate on an initial report that police were searching for a 30-year-old man as a possible suspect, who may have been traveling in a white Honda.

“This is still an open and active investigation,” said Sullivan, explaining there is limited information being made available at this time.

“I can say that this is not a random act,” said Sullivan, adding authorities believe the two victims were targeted.

He would not disclose whether there were witnesses to the shootings, but did say police are conducting interviews and continuing to search for the person responsible.

“We are actively following up on leads as we speak, and working hard on this case,” he said, adding more information will soon be released.

The last double shooting in the city occurred this past November when a handgun accidentally discharged at Canterbury Apartments and sent a woman to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg, while her male friend was shot in the hand.
