SolAmor Hospice recognizes volunteers and veterans in Bedford
BEDFORD — SolAmor Hospice recently honored the people who serve our servicemen.
The hospice, a member of the "We Honor Veterans" program, held a volunteer appreciation day at its Bedford office April 12 to recognize the volunteers providing support to terminally ill patients and their families.
We Honor Veterans is a national awareness campaign developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, according to Rita Stanton, volunteer coordinator for SolAmor Hospice.
"Our goal is to provide our veterans with the best possible end-of-life care and services, which includes volunteer and vigil support," Stanton said. "We have volunteers from all walks of life, however for those patients who have served our country, there are times when what is needed is the quiet understanding that only another veteran can provide."
One component of the We Honor Veterans program is the Veterans History Project sponsored by the Library of Congress.
Guest speaker Bob Stevens, host of "The Veterans Forum" and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, has interviewed countless veterans to preserve first-hand recollections of their service.
The Veterans Forum is broadcast on local cable channels, including BCTV in Bedford. A recording of each show is submitted to the Veterans History Project.
Stevens shared veterans' stories before opening the floor for a question-and-answer session. He offered interview techniques to volunteers working with hospice patients who may want to add their experiences to the Veterans History Project.
The volunteers received a certificate of recognition for their work at SolAmor hospice. Stevens was also presented with a certificate of achievement for producing "The Veterans Forum" and for the impact his work with the Veteran History Project has had in the local veteran community.
Anyone interested in being interviewed for an episode of "The Veterans Forum" can contact Stevens at email@example.com.
