Salem man charged with making child sex abuse images

SALEM — A 28-year-old Salem man is facing child pornography charges related to an incident in which he is accused of taking a 14-year-old Massachusetts girl across the state line.

Kevin Rodwell was arraigned in Salem District Court on Tuesday on a charge of manufacturing a child sexual abuse image, according to Salem Police Deputy Chief Shawn Patten.

Rodwell is accused of using a cellphone to take nine pornographic images of the teenage girl.

The charge results from an investigation by Salem Detectives Ryan Sambataro and H. Michael Geha, with assistance from the Medway, Mass., police and the Massachusetts State Police, according to Patten.
The pornographic images were allegedly taken at Rodwell’s apartment. The charge filed on Tuesday upgrades the severity of the charges against Rodwell.

Salem police initially arrested him on April 11 on charges of criminal restraint and endangering the welfare of a child for taking the teenager across the state line to his apartment against the wishes of the girl’s father. Related charges were filed in Massachusetts.
In court on Tuesday, Judge John Korbey ordered Rodwell held on $200,000 cash bail as requested by Salem prosecuting attorney Jason Grosky and Rodwell’s public defender, Eliana Forciniti.

According to Patten, the investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed.
Rodwell is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on May 12.
