Public meeting on Derry budget to be held tonight

DERRY — Residents will get a chance to weigh in on the proposed Fiscal Year 2015 Budget and Capital Improvement Plan during a public hearing scheduled for tonight.

If necessary, the Town Council will hold a budget workshop following the hearing, according to acting Town Administrator Larry Budreau.

The public hearing is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will follow the Town Council’s regular meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the third-floor meeting room of the Derry Municipal Center.

The proposed budget currently shows an appropriation of $36,885,131 for town services, Budreau said.

Since the budget process began earlier this month, councilors have proposed cuts of $55,021 from the budget that initially stood at $36,989,488. The initial budget is .2 percent less than this year’s budget of $37,061,798, according to officials.

In addition, there was a $49,336 reduction earlier this month because of some recent developments with the town’s health care costs, Budreau said.

Some of the cuts councilors have proposed so far include a reduction of $25,000 for cemetery road improvements from the cemetery division of Public Works and $15,000 from buildings and grounds for the replacement of carpeting in the Derry Municipal Center. Councilors have also proposed cuts of $8,127 in overtime from recreation; $2,129 in overtime from parks; and $2,765 in overtime from the transfer station, Budreau said.

After the budget review process concludes, councilors could vote on the Fiscal Year 2015 Budget at their May 6 or May 20 meeting, according to officials.
