Pedroia, Middlebrooks lift Sox over Jays
TORONTO — Dustin Pedroia and Will Middlebrooks each drove in two runs and right-hander Jake Peavy pitched seven innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 8-1 on Friday night.
Designated hitter David Ortiz homered for the Red Sox (11-13) who handed the Blue Jays (11-12) their third straight loss. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the Red Sox’s 16-hit attack.
Peavy (1-0) held the Blue Jays to five hits, two walks and one run, on a seventh-inning homer by designated hitter Juan Francisco, while striking out seven in seven innings. Left-hander Chris Capuano took over in the eighth and struck out the side.
Left-hander Mark Buehrle (4-1) allowed 12 hits, three walks and seven runs (six earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Buehrle’s ERA went from 0.64 to 2.16.
The Sox struck for four runs in the second inning keyed by Pedroia’s two-run single. They added one in the third, two in the sixth and one in the ninth.
Middlebrooks, who came off the disabled list for the game, doubled in his second run of the game in the sixth inning to score catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who singled and gave the Red Sox a 6-0 lead. Middlebrooks was out trying for third. An error by shortstop Jose Reyes and two walks by right-hander Neil Wagner, who took over from Buehrle, gave Boston a 7-0 lead.
Ninth-inning doubles by Pierzynski and Jackie Bradley Jr., who had three hits each, scored a run against right-hander Todd Redmond.
The Red Sox scored four runs in the second inning. The inning started with a walk to Mike Napoli, who took third on a double by Xander Bogaerts and scored on A.J. Pierzynski’s fly to center. Middlebrooks hit an RBI single and took third on a double by Bradley. Pedroia singled in two runs and was out trying for a double.
Ortiz hit his fifth homer of the season with one out in the third.
