Actress Sally Matson to perform at veterans home

TILTON – Actress Sally Matson will perform "Margaret Bourke-White: America's Eyes" — her one-woman living history show drawn from the life of the pioneering female photographer of the 1930s, 40s and 50s — at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home.

The event is open to the public; admission is free. The event is made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Bourke-White, who died in 1971, began her career making imposing industrial and architectural images in 1927, but went on to be a groundbreaker in many other areas.
As a photojournalist for the then-new Fortune magazine, she covered the world, from assignments in Germany to the desperation of the "Dust Bowl" during the Great Depression.

Later, as a war correspondent for Life magazine, she was the first woman photographer allowed onto the battlefields.
Her unsparing eye captured it all, right down to the piles of corpses during the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.

She photographed all the major figures of the era, from Stalin to Gen. George S. Patton to Gandhi.
Matson, who has written, acted, and directed for the theater and television for more than 40 years, speaks in character as Bourke-White during her heyday, before her career was cut short by Parkinson's Disease.
Her show is illustrated with reproductions of some of Bourke-White's most famous images and memorable Life magazine covers.
