Judge increases bail to $100,000 cash for Dover teen accused of starting fire Tuesday night

ROCHESTER — Judge Stephen Morrison hiked bail to $100,000 cash for a Dover teen accused of starting a fire that left a family homeless.
Shawn Hoyt, 19, of 8 Lincoln St., was charged with arson, a Class A felony, for allegedly starting a two-alarm fire in an attached garage at 28 Broadway St. in Dover about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire destroyed the home and damaged an adjacent duplex at 27 Pierce St. While no one was injured, a mother and four children — including a baby — lost their home.Hoyt was arrested Wednesday around 12:45 a.m., was held overnight at Strafford County Jail in Dover on $5,000 cash pending the video arraignment in 7th Circuit Court-Rochester District just before noon.

Before the video arraignment, Hoyt’s mother, Lisa, said her son “is mentally challenged” and has disabilities. She added she had not had a chance to speak to him since the incident.

Assistant County Attorney Tim Sullivan said Hoyt allegedly started the fire when he “flicked a cigarette on the garage floor” of an occupied home.

“Given the circumstances, he is a danger to the community,” Sullivan said.

He also requested the court to order Hoyt undergo a mental health evaluation and if released said Hoyt should be monitored by GPS and the Strafford County Community Corrections Program in Dover.

Morrison scheduled a bail hearing for today at 10 a.m. in 7th Circuit Court, Dover District.
