Bedford police to conduct tactical training Monday

BEDFORD — Residents may notice a large police presence at Bedford High School Monday morning as the police department conducts a tactical training exercise.

Bedford Police will be joined by members of the New Boston, Amherst, Goffstown, Manchester, Merrimack and Londonderry departments for an active shooter training exercise at the high school/middle school complex. School is not in session on Monday due to school vacation.

The scenario will have officers searching rooms for specific items and locating an active shooter. It will help prepare officers for any type of active shooter incident, such as those recently occurring in schools, malls and other public places across the country.

“We need to prepare for this,” said Lt. Michael Bernard of the Bedford Police Department. “The more training we have the better prepared we are to handle it if, God forbid, it ever happens.”

The exercise is taking place inside the building but police activity will be visible in the staging area set up in the parking lot. Motorists are urged to avoid the area of County and Nashua Roads during training due to anticipated congestion. Training starts at 7 a.m. and will end by 3 p.m.
