DERRY — With all of its members returning from last year, Pinkerton Academy’s Math Team used its experience to cruise to an undefeated season this year.
The team also claimed first place in its division for the second straight year.
This year, the team finished with five victories and only one tie in its division and went on to win the league championship, said math teacher and coach Ellen Berchtold.
The team wasn’t quite as successful last year, suffering just one defeat but also winning its division, she said. Along with all of the other team members, seniors Natalie Kukshtel and Xinyuan Zhang returned this year as co-captains.
“This is the first year we’ve had back-to-back (first-place finishes),” Kukshtel said.
The experience and a combination of other factors were critical to their championship season, Berchtold said.
“They are hard workers. They are bright kids. They are willing to work at it. They are interested. They’ve had good teachers along the way to help them,” said Berchtold, who oversees the team.
The team is in the Tri-State Math League and competed regularly against seven teams in its division.
Team members agreed that the experience from last year helped give them confidence as they entered competition this year.
“Considering that it was the same team as last year, we’ve all progressed,” said junior Rebekah Terry. “We are basically the same team but better.”
Team members include Kukshtel, Zhang, Terry and Adam DeMio.
