NHIAA Baseball: Londonderry's Corey escapes seventh-inning jam in win

LONDONDERRY - Starting pitcher Tom Corey was at his best when his Londonderry High School teammates needed him the most during Saturday's 4-2 victory over Pinkerton Academy of Derry.

Corey, who will play for Franklin Pierce University next season, limited the Astros to one hit through the first six innings, but three singles and a walk cut Pinkerton's deficit to two runs and filled the bases with no one out in the seventh.

Corey struck out the next two batters before Ryan Day hit a soft grounder to first for a 3-1 putout that ended the game.

"He was amazing today," Londonderry coach Brent Demas said when asked about Corey. "He was on top of his game. The biggest change with him is he doesn't get rattled. Couple years ago a lot of of the chirping would have gotten to him and really affected his game. Instead of folding when it got tough, that's when he stepped it up."

Left fielder Brett Evangelista, Londonderry's leadoff hitter, had two hits and scored two runs in the victory, which improved Londonderry's Division I record to 3-0. Londonderry second baseman Mike Ryan also had two hits in the game.

"One hit away," Pinkerton coach Steve Campo said. "We shoot a gap we're up one. Londonderry is not going to hand you a win. You have to go take it from them."

Corey struck out eight, walked two and hit one batter. One of Pinkerton's two runs was unearned.

Pinkerton received six strong innings from sophomore pitcher John Polichetti, who has committed to play baseball at Boston College. Polichetti gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked two.

Polichetti, Riley Cahill, Connor Donahue and Tom Diskin collected Pinkerton's hits. The Astros scored when Cahill doubled in Joe Murphy in the third, and when Cahill drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

The loss dropped Pinkerton's record to 2-1.

Londonderry took a 3-1 lead by scoring twice in the fifth. A single by Rob Del Signore drove in Evangelista, and a Ryan single scored Geoff Kayo. Londonderry added to its lead in the sixth, when a Zach Tavano single drove in pinch-runner Jordan Tutt.

The Lancers also scored in the first. Kayo's sacrifice fly to center allowed Evangelista to tag and score.

Corey, who was 6-3 with a 1.13 ERA last season, threw 110 pitches in the game.

"I don't think are bats are where they're going to be, but I can't complain about the pitching," Demas said.

Softball

Windham 5, Merrimack Valley 0: At Penacook, Rachael Vafides and Emily Comtois each collected two hits to help Windham raise its Division II record to 3-0. Windham's Rachel Rogers had her bid for a no-hitter broken up when Brittany Fisher singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Merrimack Valley slipped to 0-2.
