Monarchs finish regular season with OT loss

Left wing Matt Fraser scored a goal in the third period to tie the game and another in overtime, that one on the power play, to lift the Providence Bruins over the Manchester Monarchs, 2-1, on Friday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

The Monarchs closed out the regular season with a record of 48-19-9 for 105 points. They had already cllnched first place in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. Now they wait until the American Hockey League wraps up its season tonight to see who their opponent will be in the first round of the playoffs.

Manchester will be the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and take on the No. 8 seed and will play either Portland, Albany or Norfolk. Norfolk knocked Hershey out of the running for the No. 8 spot by beating the Bears 3-1 on Friday night.

Providence improved to 40-24-11 and guaranteed itself a playoff spot with the win. The Bruins close out the season at Worcester tonight.

Monarchs forward James Livingston opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 3:36 left in the first period. Nic Dowd and Colin Fraser had assists.

Fraser tied the game at 1-1 with his 19th goal of the season at the 3:12 mark of the third period.

He got his 20th on the power play at the 2:57 mark to win it.

The Monarchs had just killed off one penalty in OT when Andy Andreoff was called for goaltender interference. Fraser scored 36 seconds into that man advantage.

J.F. Berube had 22 saves for the Monarchs.
