Vote: ‘No nit’ policy relaxed for Manchester schools

April 14. 2014 10:51PM

MANCHESTER — The school board on Monday voted 9-5 to back recommendations of the city’s health authorities and relax its “no-nit” policy on head lice.

The vote represents a reversal from last year, when the revised policy never made it out of committee.

This time around, a majority on the board voted to support the recommended change in the policy.

Under the policy, students would no longer be sent home “immediately” if they’re found to have lice. Instead, nurses and principals would have discretion to send them home.

The policy would also eliminate periodic lice examinations by school nurses.
