Tweeting Cuba: Obama undermines a Commie?

April 07. 2014 5:25PM

In 2010, the U.S. government launched a plot to destabilize the regime of Cuban despot Fidel Castro by creating a Cuban “Twitter” service. Cubans would communicate with each other without the oversight of government censors. It was exposed by the Associated Press last week, and predictably many liberals expressed their displeasure — not with the AP, but with the Obama administration.

The U.S. government has a long history of undermining Communist regimes in both effective and comically inept ways. In the 1950s, we flooded the Soviet Union with copies of “Dr. Zhivago.” Back then, both major political parties were strongly anti-Communist. Today, too many Americans on the left consider Che Guevara a hero rather than the murdering totalitarian he was, and Castro too.

To be legal, the Cuban Twitter plot must have received the approval of President Obama. If it did, Obama deserves a pat on the back. The United States should undermine Commie regimes as long as there are Commie regimes to undermine.
