Crash closes Route 1 in Portsmouth for an hour Wednesday

PORTSMOUTH – Nine people were sent to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries after a three-vehicle crash near the former site of Yoken’s restaurant.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded around 1 p.m. after two cars and a passenger van were involved in the accident at 1391 Lafayette Road – Route 1.

The road, which was closed as crews assisted the drivers and passengers, was reopened after 2 p.m., according to Police Lt. Darrin Sargent.

Sargent said it was "a bad accident."

While the identities of the drivers and passengers have not been released, Police Sgt. Rich Webb said all nine occupants were sent to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

“At this time, it doesn’t appear any of the injuries are life threatening,” Webb said, adding some of them have already been treated and released.
