Fashion show focuses on cancer care and a cure
WINDHAM — Students and local celebrities will strut the catwalk in style this month during a charity event that has become an annual tradition for those in the greater Windham community.
The fifth annual Styles and Smiles Fashion Show for breast cancer will take place Saturday, April 12, at Windham High School.
The fashion show is a collaboration between Windham High School's Smiles Club, which is a student community service organization, and Team BellaDonna, an Avon Walk for Breast Cancer team led by Windham cancer survivor Donna Bramante-InDelicato.
"We've really reached out to the entire community this year to incorporate all ages and some local celebrities as our models," Bramante-InDelicato said this week.So far, a group of local high school students and teachers, as well as Windham School Board member Jerome Rekart, Windham Town Clerk Nicole Bottai and her infant daughter, Lena, and representatives of both the Windham Moms Club and the Windham Women's Business Connection are set to show off the latest spring fashions.
Bramante-InDelicato said she's also invited two local children whose mother is battling breast cancer to participate as event models, along with members of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Youth Crew.
Windham High School junior Alex Monfette, who studies fashion design, will also show off some of her "up-cycled" prom dress creations.
Not wanting to leave out some of the community's latest additions, a group of Golden Brook Elementary School third-graders spending the remainder of the school year at the high school while that school's portable classrooms undergo repairs, the so-called "Junior Jaguars" will be given their chance to take part in the show as well.
The third-graders will model some of the "In It to End It" T-shirts being sold during the event, helping to raise additional funds for breast cancer research and patient support.
Students from the Londonderry Dance Academy will entertain crowds with an original dance number, while ConvenientMD Urgent Care in Windham is sponsoring the event's concessions.
Guest speakers from the national Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Foundation will also be in attendance. Last year the Styles and Smiles event was commended by the foundation, having raised more than $9,000 since its inaugural year.
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Boston takes participants on a 40-mile stroll of the city. Each walker raises a minimum of $1,800 for the cause.
Donations to support the local team can be made online at www.avonwalk.org or on the team's website, www.teambelladonna.weebly.com.
The annual Styles and Smiles Fashion Show will take place Saturday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Windham High School auditorium.
Tickets will be sold at the door for a donation of $10 per person, or two tickets for $15. Breast cancer survivors will be admitted free of charge.
All event proceeds will go directly to the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation.firstname.lastname@example.org
