Hollis students' Energy Day to focus on environmental alternatives

HOLLIS — A community event in Hollis this spring will focus on educating others on the importance of sustainable energy and preserving natural resources.

On May 4, the Student Sustainable Energy Team (SSET), a group of environmentally conscious local high school students, will host their second annual Energy Day at the Lawrence Barn in Hollis.

The free, public event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m.

The club’s treasurer, Alex Thyng, said the club is a diverse group of students who work closely with Sustainable Legacy, a national nonprofit group emphasizing sustainable living.

“Our natural curiosity, enthusiasm for learning and love of our communities inspires us to see solutions for productive utility and responsible stewardship of our natural resources for generations to come,” Thyng said.

Working as a team, the SSET participates in various projects involving sustainable energy concepts, technologies and innovations.

On Energy Day, local families will have the chance to participate in a variety of educational activities.

Thyng said one of the day’s events would be an Energy Scavenger Hunt, where they can gather clues in an energy fact book and have the chance to win prizes like a hydroponic fish tank.

Other exhibits include displays of vehicles powered by alternative energy sources and information on solar, wind and hydro energy resources

“It’s a great medium to learn all the ways alternative energy improves our lives,” Thyng said. “Interactive demonstrations will help children and adults understand the need for more efficient and less expensive sources of energy.”

“We’re trying to teach both children and adults about alternative energy and its impact on the world,” added Anjithaa Radakrishnan, the club’s vice president.
