Newport firefighters rescue dog from Sugar River

NEWPORT — Firefighters rescued a dog from the Sugar River Friday morning.

Rescuers responded to the river on Sunapee Street behind Newport Mills for a report of a dog that went through the ice about 9:10 a.m.

The dog, Chloe, belongs to a town public works employee, said Newport Fire Lt. Copeland Miller, and had been missing for about 24 hours when she was found in the icy river.

When firefighters arrived the dog was all right, he said.

“The dog was up against a board at the dam of the Newport Mills,” Miller said.

Firefighters waited untill the owner arrived and could calm Chloe down before rescuers went in to save her.

Once the owner arrived the dog was picked up, brought on shore and dried off. From there her owner took her home.
