Goffstown teacher honored with prestigious math educator award

TASSI

GOFFSTOWN — Lynn Tassi, a seventh-grade teacher at Mountain View Middle School, is passionate about her work and wants students to see the fun in learning math.

Because of Tassi’s passion, creativity and innovation in teaching math, she won the 2014 Richard C. Evans Distinguished Mathematics Educator Award on March 17.

Tassi said while she is grateful to receive the honor, the award holds a special meaning for her.

“Dr. Evans was my college professor and adviser. I hold him in such high esteem,” said Tassi. “He was so innovative and inspiring. He was very patient and easy to approach, and very supportive.”

When Tassi was pursuing her degree in kindergarten through elementary education with a minor in math at then-Plymouth State College, she learned elementary functions and teaching methods from Evans. He retired from the university in December 2006, after more than 40 years as a mathematics teacher.

Tassi, of Dunbarton, strives to instill a love of learning math in her students as she tries to develop their confidence through hands-on tools and different learning techniques, she said.

“I want them to leave me knowing they can do it and strive as much as they can achieve. I know it’s high expectations, but I hope I can be as infectious as Dr. Evans was to me,” she said.

Principal Wendy Hastings said Tassi has been a wonderful teacher in her 19 years at Mountain View Middle School — Tassi’s first job out of college.

“Lynn is infectious, bright and motivated. Lynn exemplifies great teaching,” said Hastings.

“The Mountain View Middle School community is so fortunate to have such a dynamic, student-centered professional on our staff. She helps teachers in this building move with the times so teaching is up to par.”

As award recipient, Tassi receives $500, which may be used at her discretion; a plaque; a free, one-year membership to the New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics association; becomes an honorary board member for one year with an invitation to attend quarterly board meetings to help design and implement activities for members; an invitation to present at the spring conference in 2015; she may contribute articles for the quarterly newsletter; and is encouraged to develop professional development opportunities for teachers.

“I do what I do because I love what I do and I strive to improve daily and yearly,” said Tassi. “I’m very grateful to be able to have been an educator for this school district for the 19 years I’ve been here.”

Past recipients include: 2008, Greg Superchi, Lisbon Regional High School, Lisbon; 2009, Stephanie Wheeler, Henry Wilson School, Manchester; 2010, Greta Mills, Hanover High School; 2011, Dr. Beverly Ferrucci, Keene State College; 2012, Christine Downing, Newport School District; and 2013, Lisa Gingras, Nashua High School South.
