Canaan husband, wife charged in connection with teen's rape
CANAAN — A Canaan couple has been jailed and charged in connection with the rape of a 15-year-old girl, police announced Tuesday.
Raymond Estes, 36, was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault involving the girl, police said. His wife, Niessa Estes, 34, was arrested on two Class A misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child. Police allege that Niessa Estes knew about the sexual abuse and did nothing to stop it.
During an arraignment Monday, a judge increased Raymond Estes' bail to $50,000 cash; his wife's bail stayed at $5,000 cash, police said.
The couple was being held at the Grafton County jail while police continue their investigation. Raymond Estes' charge is a special felony, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, police said.
Niessa Estes faces up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted.
