Antioch to establish climate center at its Keene campus

KEENE — Antioch University New England is creating the new Center for Climate Preparedness and Community Resilience in response to a White House initiative.

The center will be a resource to support President Barack Obama’s Climate Data Initiative, which was announced by the White House on Wednesday.

Obama’s initiative encourages private and public innovation in the use of data to assess climate-change risks in ways that can help citizens, businesses and communities.

Antioch has particular areas of expertise in the initiative’s first area of focus, preparing for coastal impacts of climate change, Antioch said.

Abigail Abrash Walton, director of Antioch University New England’s Center for Academic Innovation and assistant to the president for Sustainability/Social Justice, is attending the launch of the federal initiative in Washington, D.C.

“We’re pleased to support the Climate Data Initiative,” Walton said in the announcement. “Through AUNE faculty leadership, we have been making an impact, working with communities, to contribute to effective local decision- making so that communities become more resilient. Research and public engagement by our faculty and students particularly benefit communities dealing with the challenges of climate change. This new effort creates a vehicle through which we can easily broaden our impact and form new initiatives and partnerships.”

Over the past decade Antioch University New England has made a commitment to build the community’s ability to address climate change effects. The new center will expand on that work, which includes research, community engagement, sustainable development, climate change education.

Antioch plans to kick off the center in May at a conference co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for municipal, county and regional leaders who face climate change challenges.

The Local Solution: Northeast Climate Change Preparedness Conference is planned to be held in Manchester May 19 through the 21.
