PLAISTOW — An Atkinson piano teacher remained free on bail following his first court appearance on charges that he molested a male student at his home music studio over a period of three years.

John Goodwin, 74, of 23 Academy Lane is charged with a single count of aggravated felonious sexual assault.

Goodwin was arraigned on Monday in 10th Circuit Court in Plaistow. Prosecutors allege he engaged in a pattern of molesting the youth in May 2002, when the boy was age 11.

The assaults allegedly happened at Goodwin’s home business, Goodwin Music Academy, according to police. The alleged assaults continued until about May 1, 2005, according to a court complaint.

The victim came forward to investigators about four months ago.

Goodwin was ordered by a judge to have no contact with anyone under the age of 17, including the alleged victim in the case, according to court records.

Atkinson police arrested Goodwin at his home on Feb. 14 following a three-month investigation by the police department and the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office.

Police said after Goodwin’s arrest that they were looking into whether the boy was the only victim. Goodwin was still operating his music business at his home when he was arrested.

Atkinson police Chief Al Brackett said on Monday that the investigation remains open.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” Brackett said. “At this point, we don’t have any additional charges.” Police said when they arrived at Goodwin’s home to arrest him in February, he became unresponsive. Goodwin had to taken by ambulance to Exeter Hospital for evaluation, police said.

Goodwin is due back at 10th Circuit Court in Plaistow on April 21 for a probable cause hearing. The hearing will allow Goodwin to challenge whether police had collected enough evidence to support the arrest.

Atkinson police are asking anyone with information about this investigation to contact them at 603-363-4001.
