Arts-based charter high school in Derry begins accepting applications

DERRY — Granite State Arts Academy, a charter school, is now accepting student applications for grades 9-12.

The development is a major milestone for the arts-based school, Chairman Wendie Leweck said Thursday.

"This is huge," Leweck said.

The academy will be accepting the applications through March 28. It is also accepting teacher applications through March 28, Leweck said.

The school will serve grades nine through 12 and offer core academics as well as studies in four areas of art: dance, music (including voice), theater and visual arts. Granite State Arts Academy plans to open with all four grades, capping enrollment at 40 pupils per grade or a total of 160 students.
The opening of school is set for Sept. 3 Leweck said.
And in another first, the charter school is scheduled to hold a fundraiser at noon on Saturday, March 22, at the school at 16 Route 111 Building 4, Derry. Members of the school's board of trustees are inviting the public to join them for a pizza buffet and the opportunity to meet Dr. Michele Fox, the first director of school. Live music is scheduled, along with a raffle of several gift baskets and a 50/50 draw. Admission is $10.

"This is a wonderful way to meet interested families, members of the community, and see the progress of modifications to the school," Leweck said.
