Errol town warrant passes easily

March 15. 2014 9:12PM

ERROL - Errol voters approved all of their town meeting warrant articles Saturday, including $1.9 million to rehabilitate the town water system.

Selectman Marc Poulin said the system, which has 74 customers, is an aging system that has failed some tests.

"It's nothing that will harm anyone," he said, "but it doesn't meet state standards."

Poulin said the oldest parts of the system date back to the 1960s and '70s. The last time it was last updated more than 20 years ago.

The article required a two-thirds ballot approval. Poulin said only a handful voted against it.

Poulin said discussion on the article lasted more than one hour. Most of the questions related to the cost and who would pay for it.

It is the selectmen's intention that the ratepayers pay, but that hasn't been decided. The town will be pursuing whatever grants and other aid might be available. Approval was contingent upon receiving at least $1 million in state, federal or other grants.

"We're just getting into it. We're not sure what money sources will be available," Poulin said. "It will be a year or two before a shovel even goes into the ground, so we have another town meeting to change things if we need to."

The town went on to approve all of the remaining articles, including $7,000 for the Fourth of July celebration and a total of $11,000 for various capital reserve accounts.- Debra Thornblad
