Manchester police pursuit ends in arrest
MANCHESTER - A missing front license plate resulted in a brief police chase with speeds reaching about 50 mph on city streets late Thursday afternoon which ended with the arrest of a man wanted by the U.S. Marshal's Service.
The incident began about 5 p.m. when Officer Thomas Donovan noticed a blue Chevrolet Impala without a front license plate leaving the area of Pigeon's Market on Wilson Street.
Donovan turned on his blue lights to try and pull over the driver who, police said, sped up and headed south on Wilson Street. The car abruptly turned west onto Somerville Street and then, reaching speeds of 50 mph, sped through several stops signs between Lincoln and Union Streets, before heading north on Union Street.
The chase was called off and police lost sight of the Impala. About 15 minutes later, however, Officer Din Jenkins located the car in the driveway of 165 Taylor St.
The driver, identified by police as Terrance Sleweon, 28, of 493 Maple St., was found in an adjacent yard and briefly struggled with Detective Aaron Brown who attempted to handcuff him, police said.
He was arrested on charges of reckless conduct, a felony; disobeying a police officer; resisting arrest, and driving after license suspension/revocation.
Police said Sleweon also is wanted on a U.S. Marshal warrant on an unrelated charge.
A year ago, Sleweon was arrested on an escape charge after he failed to report to a federal halfway house. He originally was sentenced to two years in federal prison after being convicted of distributing cocaine.
Police said Sleweon was on probation for the drug charge and he had $4,800, which was seized. It was seized because a K-9 hit on traces of drugs on the cash, said Sgt. Brian N. O'Keefe.
At his arraignment Friday morning in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division, Sleweon could enter no plea to the felony charge, so a probable cause hearing was set for March 25. Trial on the remaining charges was set for April 10.
Bail was set at $10,000 cash/surety, but there is a no-bail federal detainer on Sleweon in connection with the escape charge.
