NHIAA Hockey: Bedford rolls past Lebanon, into D-II semis

GOFFSTOWN - Senior Harrison Voloshin netted a hat trick and classmate Steve Tempesta posted a shutout to lead No. 1 Bedford past No. 9 Lebanon 6-0 in Division II hockey action at St. Anselm College Saturday.

The top-ranked and two-time champion Bulldogs improved to 19-0-0 and play in the semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at The Rinks at Exeter against the winner of Saturday's late game between No. 4 Spaulding of Rochester and No. 5 Pelham-Windham. No. 9 Lebanon ended the season at 8-11-1.

"Harry's been playing well for the last couple games. It's good when the big players play well in the big games," Bedford coach Marty Myers said of Voloshin. "(Tempesta) got tested early and they were two quality opportunities that he took away from them. That's what started the energy."

Bedford survived a slew of penalties and actually benefitted, scoring three shorthanded goals.

"That's not normally the case. That's not how we want to score. We want to score five-on-five," Myers said. "We put ourselves in trouble but we did a good job getting out of it."

Voloshin started the scoring at 4:12 of the first period, tallying off a feed from captain Mike Dee. Junior Asa Palker scored at 7:34 to give Bedford a 2-0 lead after one period.

Palker struck again, this time shorthanded, at 5:49 of the second period. Voloshin added a shorthanded goal at 10:26 to make it 4-0 after two.

Voloshin completed the hat trick 41 seconds into the third period, converting a shorthanded two-on-one bid with Palker for the 5-0 lead.

"The bounces were going our way and we outplayed them," Voloshin said. "We did a great job penalty killing. We pressured them well and we got a few good breaks."

A Drew Connelly slap shot goal from the right point at 5:42 finished the scoring and Tempesta held on for his fifth shutout of the season.
