Firefighters battle blaze at Pittsfield pizza plant

PITTSFIELD -- Firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze at a pizza manufacturing plant overnight, depleting the town's water supply, resulting in the school being closed today.

The fire, reported about 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Rustic Crust Pizza, 31 Barnstead Road, is now under control but at 6:45 a.m, firefighters were still on the scene, pouring water on the building.

According to Channel 9, frigid temperatures froze fire trucks and other equipment, hampering the firefighters. Hours of pouring water on the blaze also resulted in the town's water supply being depleted, requiring fire crews to set up a shuttle system where water from the Suncook River was brought to the scene in tankers.

WMUR reported there were about 20 employees inside the building when the fire broke out in the area of the pizza oven. An employee tried to put the fire out using an extinguisher but was unable to do so.
