LITCHFIELD — Zach Bergeon scored 19 points to lead Campbell of Litchfield to a 58-38 victory over Fall Mountain of Langdon in the second round of the NHIAA Division III boys’ basketball tournament in Thursday.
The No. 5-seeded Cougars improved to 16-3 and will host No. 13 Raymond on Saturday night. Raymond upset No. 4 Newport on Thursday night, 53-46.
Fall Mountain was 10-9.
“For a team without seniors to go 16-3 ... I couldn’t be prouder,” said Campbell coach John Langlois. “They took care of the ball and really played well.”
Freshman Harrison Vedrani added 12 points for Campbell. Nick Burns led Fall Mountain with 14 points and Ryan Murdoch scored nine.
The Cougar defense limited scoring chances for Fall Mountain, which shot 28 percent. “I thought we had some open looks but we couldn’t knock them down,” said Fall Mountain coach Jason Bardis.
The Wildcats were not able to slow Bergeon down in the middle. “Our center, Nick Burns, had a tough time with their big guy in the middle,” said Bardis. “They were much more athletic than us.”
Campbell led 26-18 at halftime, then opened the second half with a 12-0 surge. Fall Mountain never recovered.
“I think our 2-3 zone is very good,” said Langlois. “Anytime you keep a team to 38 points you’re doing well.”
