Synagogue will celebrate Purim

DERRY — Etz Hayim Synagogue will celebrate the holiday of Purim on Saturday, March 15, at 8 p.m.

Purim commemorates a time when the Jews living in ancient Persia were saved from extermination, as recounted in the Biblical Book of Esther.

At this carnival-like celebration, adults will dress in costumes, eat, drink, and make merry

Congregants will perform the story of Purim as adapted to the popular tunes of the band Queen. There will be a contest for the most creative “hamantashen” (Purim cookies).

The synagogue will also host a Purim children’s carnival on Sunday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, see www.etzhayim.org or contact Rabbi Bryna Milkow at 432-0004.

Pelham church offers Lent series

PELHAM — The First Congregational Church of Pelham United Church of Christ, in association with the New England Pastoral Institute, is offering a four-week Lenten Adult Education series called “The New Normal: Caring for our Aging Parents.”

The sessions are being held on Monday evenings, March, 10, 17, 24 and 31, 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The Rev. Bill Ferguson, pastor of First Congregational Church of Pelham UCC, will be joined by the Rev. Amy Alletzhauser, a methodist pastor and therapist at the New England Pastoral Institute of Salem, to lead discussions surrounding the issues that arise as our parents age.

So many people are dealing with health, financial, housing and medical care issues of our parents that we can become overwhelmed in our new responsibilities.

The class will examine change, issues of authority, emotions and regaining balance in our changing relationships.
