Sports volunteers: Eric Mommsen embodies the spirit

March 02. 2014 7:47PM

Among the things that make New Hampshire New Hampshire are our youth sports programs and the many coaches, officials, and parents who support them. It is not an exaggeration to say that a lot of our teens and adolescents would be in for a tougher time making their way through life without these efforts.

It is hard to put a value on the work and time of those who get involved with youth sports. It is certainly true that the value is much higher than the monetary recompense that coaches and officials receive, if any. As for parents and other volunteers, that goes double.

We were struck by the words of one such volunteer, Eric Mommsen of Somersworth, in accepting an award at our recent Leaders Celebration of Sports Champions. (Speaking of volunteers, our thanks go to the Union Leader's Board of Judges for their work in selecting our honorees; and to Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center and to Apple Therapy Services for their sponsorship of the Leaders event.)

Mommsen spoke from the heart, and eloquently so. We have reprinted extended excerpts from his remarks on the page opposite this one today.

Be it baseball, basketball, field hockey, golf, hopscotch, etc. etc., Mommsen has been involved in supporting it in and around Somersworth. And this is in addition to his day job. He is a third-grade teacher in the public school system.

He has been an equipment manager for Little League. He announces opening day ceremonies and high school hockey games and the starting lineups at Hilltopper football games. (Later, he switches to filming the games.)

If you are involved in New Hampshire youth sports, you know Eric Mommsen, or you know men and women just like him in communities around the state. You may in fact be one of them.

Please read what Mommsen has to say. It may go for you as well and in any case, it will make you feel better to be living in the same state.
