College Sports: Penmen working on the weekend

Third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University will battle fourth-seeded St. Michael's College for the Northeast-10 men's ice hockey championship Saturday at 2:10 p.m. at the Ice Den in Hooksett.

The Penmen (16-8-1) are led by sophomores Jim Gabrione (17 goals, 21 assists) and Joe Collins (17 goals, 21 assists). This week Collins was named the NE-10 Player of the Year.

In the semifinals, the Penmen eliminated St. Anselm 4-1 at Sullivan Arena. The surprising Purple Knights (7-16-3) upset top-seeded Stonehill in the semifinals, 2-1.

But St. Michael's has a strong post-season resume. St. Michael's is playing in its 18th post-season tournament in 19 seasons. They are searching for their sixth NE-10 title. The Penmen, an 8-4 winner against the Purple Knights on Jan. 7, are seeking their first tournament crown in five tries.

In men's basketball, the Penmen will begin to defend their Northeast-10 tournament championship today in a play-in game at 7 p.m. against American International College at the Fieldhouse.

SNHU (15-10 overall, 12-9 NE-10) finished fifth in the Northeast Division and AIC (9-18, 6-14 NE-10) ended fifth in the Southwest Division.

The Penmen defeated the Yellow Jackets on Jan. 11 at the Fieldhouse, 77-60. Elijah Bonsignore led the Penmen with 21 points and former Manchester Central standout Mike Stys amassed 14 points. The winner today gets a quarterfinal date with Southwest Division champ Southern Connecticut State on Sunday at 3 p.m.

St. Anselm College, the Northeast Division champion with a 19-6 overall record, will host the winner of today's game between Bentley and St. Rose on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Franklin Pierce University (20-6, 15-6 NE-10), the second seed in the Northeast Division, draws Le Moyne on Sunday at 3 p.m.

In women's basketball play-in games today. St. Anselm hits the road to face Le Moyne at 5 p.m. FPU hosts Southern Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
