Virginia is for the Monarchs this weekend

The red-hot Manchester Monarchs will hit the road this weekend for two games at Norfolk.

The Monarchs play at Norfolk tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.. Manchester is 6-0-1 in its past seven games and leads the AHL in points with 80 thanks to a record of 36-14-8.

The Monarchs have not faced Norfolk (28-17-8) since beating the Admirals twice at Verizon Wireless Arena in November.

“There is unfamiliarity from both ends. Coming out of the Olympic break, I suspect that they’re probably feeling out their own team chemistry just as we are,” Monarchs head coach Mark Morris said. “I think the healthiest way to go about it is to really focus on our game. We’ll get some looks at video and try and make the necessary adjustments.”

Morris said practice went well this week as his team adjusts to life without the top scoring line of Tanner Pearson, Linden Vey and Tyler Toffoli, all of whom were called up to Los Angeles last week.

“I think the attitude (in practice) was real positive,” Morris said. “I think a lot of guys that have been chomping at the bit to get into the lineup are ready to go. After having a couple of successful weekends back to back, it was a good week.”

Aside from the missing pieces, the rest of the roster is in fine shape heading into the final push for the playoffs.

“We’re pretty healthy at this juncture and we’ve got an extra forward and one extra (defenseman),” Morris said. “Hopefully, we can stay healthy and continue on the track we’re on right now.”

Following the trip to Norfolk, the Monarchs will enjoy a four-game homestand that starts next Friday when Adirondack visits.
