Red Sox open with sweep of NU, BC

The Boston Red Sox swept a doubleheader to open its 2014 exhibition season with identical 5-2 wins over Northeastern University and Boston College at Fort Myers, Fla. Both games were seven innings.
The Red Sox scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the win against Northeastern while Travis Shaw drove in three in the victory over Boston College.
Northeastern’s Sean Lyons reached base twice with a single and a walk and stole a base. His brother, Connor Lyons, was 0-for-2, and teammate Josh Treff, the starting catcher from Salem, was 0-for-1.
Meanwhile, in Tampa, Fla., Conway, N.H.’s Jeff Locke pitched two innings of one-hit, no-run ball to help the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the New York Yankees, 8-2.
