Newport voters to weigh raises for district’s teachers

NEWPORT — Teacher pay raises and a $17.5 million budget are up for a vote at the Newport School District annual meeting.

The meeting is planned for March 11 at the Newport Opera House from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The proposed $17,522,644 budget would have an estimated tax impact of 34 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The default budget of $17,550,591 would have an estimated tax impact of 41 cents per $1,000.

Four articles would provide pay increases for teachers and support staff as called for in a new collective bargaining agreement between the School Board and Teachers Association to increase salaries and benefits in order to restore “equitable salary steps as stated in previous contracts.”

Christie is the real deal

We have found Gov. Chris Christie to be the most consistent, the most confident in his abilities, the most tested under fire, and the most likely to regain the White House from a disastrous Democratic regime.
