Two Goffstown police officers save woman’s life after suspected overdose

GOFFSTOWN — Police Officers Tom Defosses and Konrad Jaworowski responded to a 911 call within three minutes and helped save the life of a woman in a suspected heroin overdose.

At 1:18 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, police arrived at 43 Henriette St. in the Pinardville section of town, and found an unconscious, 19-year-old woman who was not breathing. The officers immediately began administering CPR and attached an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the victim, said Sgt. Dave Rivard.

Officers continued CPR until the woman was revived, and they stayed with her until Goffstown fire and rescue arrived about 1:30 a.m. Rivard said the EMS crew responded from the town village area.

Police go through yearly CPR and AED training in case they respond to medical calls, he said. “The training rotates every year with CPR, AED and first response. Police respond to a lot of medical calls, and the first thing they’ll bring with them is a defibrillator and a mask,” Rivard said. “A lot of times we’ll get there and the victim is responsive, and other times they begin initial AED and full CPR until EMS arrives, which can take several minutes.”

As Goffstown Fire/EMS were preparing for transport, the victim was alert and responsive. Police said evidence at the scene suggested that the woman had overdosed on heroin.

“The victim’s recovery is in no doubt due to the officers’ quick response in evaluation and administration of CPR and the AED,” said Capt. Rob Browne in a news release.

Defosses and Jaworowski have been with the department for several years, said Rivard.

The overdose and alleged heroin possession are still under investigation and police would not release the name of the woman.
