Crash snarls traffic on Route 101 eastbound in Epping
EPPING – An accident involving a van and a dump truck that overturned and spilled its load of sand snarled traffic on Route 101 Thursday morning.
The accident was reported at 7:44 a.m. in the eastbound lane near Exit 6.
State police Lt. Chris Vetter said a minor accident occurred earlier on Route 101 eastbound approaching Exit 6 that caused vehicles to slow down.
A 2013 Ford E-250 van driven by Brett Piar, 34, of Manchester, swerved into the right breakdown lane to avoid another accident as traffic slowed.
Police said Piar’s van became stuck in the snow on the right side of the highway.
A short time later, police said a 2006 STRG LT9500 dump truck operated by Lawrence Jache, 78, of Manchester, also swerved to the right to avoid a collision with the slowing traffic.
The dump truck then hit the van and began to roll over, striking a 1999 Saab 9-3 driven by Leslie Jolland, 34, of Hooksett, as it rolled, police said.
The dump truck ended up on its right side in the center median and lost its load of sand on the highway.
The drivers of the van and truck were transported to local hospitals, but it appears they suffered only minor injuries, Vetter said.
Vetter said glare from the sun may have been a factor in the crash. The highway didn't appear to be slippery at the time, he said.
The accident closed the left travel lane on Route 101 eastbound for more than two hours. Police said all travel lanes were closed intermittently for several minutes at a time to allow for vehicle removal and roadway cleanup.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Thomas Conlon. Anyone with information pertaining to this collision is asked to contact Conlon at 223-8490. State Police were assisted at the scene by the Epping Police Department, the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department, the Epping Fire Department, the Brentwood Fire Department, the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, and the state Department of Transportation.
